Within a regional economy, one of the ways to build connections between rural counties and metropolitan areas involves developing a stronger regional food system.
 
Promoting food that is grown locally and sold locally represents a pragmatic economic development strategy. Over the past decade, the number of local farmers markets has doubled. Equally important, traditional grocery stores are opening their shelves to local produce.
